Lake Lanier

Lake Sidney Lanier is one of Georgia’s largest lakes, containing 38,000 acres of water and 692 miles of shoreline. It was built (and is presently operated) by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lake Lanier was created in 1956 with the construction of Buford Dam and filled by the Chattahoochee and Chestatee Rivers. The lake is located in the counties of Hall, Forsyth, Dawson, Gwinnett, and Lumpkin.

The main purposes of the lake are to control flooding downstream, generate hydroelectric power, and provide drinking water - mainly for metro Atlanta.

The lake is extremely popular with fisherman, recreational boaters, and tourists - particularly around the summer holidays. Lake Lanier has an estimated 7.5 million visitors per year, including its marinas and the Lake Lanier Islands waterpark.

During the 1996 Summer Olympics the rowing and sprint canoeing events were held at Lake Lanier. And the lake has also hosted the canoe sprint World Championships in 2003 at the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club.
